                    About Our Community

Congregation Beis Hillel (formerly known as The Elmora Hills Minyan) is proud to be a part of the historic Jewish community of Elizabeth, which has roots dating back to the late 1800's. When Rav Pinchas Mordechai Teitz zt”l arrived in Elizabeth in 1935, he helped shape the Elizabeth community into what it is today: a vibrant epicenter of Jewish life that continues to flourish, with new families moving in each year.

Our beautiful suburban community enjoys very affordable housing and low property taxes compared to other Jewish communities in the region, an eruv, a "Shabbos park" that is filled with children, three mikvaos, Hatzalah, a kosher grocery, kosher restaurants including New Jersey’s first kosher Dunkin’ Donuts, a 24-hour Shoprite and several 24-hour pharmacies. Our children play in Shomer Shabbos little league baseball teams during the summer and catch up on their reading in our local library with special Sunday hours.

We're just 3 blocks away from the Union YM-YWHA, a fully kosher Jewish community center that offers early childcare, summer day camp, senior programming as well as a comprehensive fitness center and pool (including separate hours for men and women).

We have several academic options, including the Jewish Educational Center’s Yeshiva of Elizabeth (N-6), the Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy for boys in grades 7-12, Bruriah School for Girls for grades 7-12, as well as Yeshivas Be’er Yitzchok for post-graduate men’s Torah study. We are also a short drive to the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/Rae Kushner Yeshiva High school in Livingston.

We're a short drive from excellent medical centers, including Trinitas Regional Medical Center, Newark Beth Israel Medical CenterOverlook Hospital, and Saint Barnabas Medical Center. Our local Jewish Family Service of Central New Jersey offers comprehensive mental health services, kosher meals on wheels and elder home visits for seniors and a kosher food pantry for those in need.

There are plenty of great nearby shopping destinations such as the The Mills at Jersey Gardens (formerly Jersey Gardens Mall) and The Mall at Short Hills, both of which are less than 18 minutes away and are open on Sunday.

We are just 10 minutes away from Newark Airport (though you'd never know it from walking down the street) with easy access the New Jersey Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and New York City via the Goethals Bridge. There are also numerous mass transit options including New Jersey Transit’s Northeast Corridor (Elizabeth Station) and Raritan Line (Union Station), and commuter buses. Our neighborhood is a safe one with a very responsive police department, professional (paid) fire department and Hatzalah of Union County.
